Not Your Mama’s Trail Mix

Trail mix was a staple in my childhood. Field trips, girl scout “camping” adventures, 14hour flights around the world – didn’t matter the excursion, you’d be sure to find me with a book, some GORP, and probably a back-up book.

I know. But I just can’t contain my nerd sometimes. Let’s just say, it’s a blessing they hadn’t invented the e-Reader back in the day. Sure, I might have actually gotten into Harvard if they had. But I’d never have looked up from what I was reading long enough to find out.

And the greatest thing about trail mix? You can put Anything in it. As long as it doesn’t melt too much, or squish, you can cram as much into that thing as the bowl will hold.

I was what was known as a Master Mixer. All the voices in my head told me so. M&M’s, peanuts, cheerios, raisins, craisins, butterscotch chips, my mother’s good “company” nut mix, marshmallows, pretzels….the possible combinations were endless.

If I made that kind of trail mix now? I’d be the Best. Mom. Ever. Come Mother’s Day, I’d be gifted with cards, flowers, and my children’s finest bowel movements ever. Just for me.

Maybe its because I’m allergic to flowers.

Or because my new-found knowledge that “healthy” doesn’t just mean getting only one value meal at Taco Bell.

Or maybe its because I’m just mean.

And ate all the chocolate…

But the trail mix I make for the kids is bare-bones compared to the mixes of yore. Nuts. Craisins. And Banana Chips, if I’m feeling generous.

And the Littles think it is AWESOME. They get to pour, they get to mix, and they get to eat whatever “accidentally” lands on the floor in the process.

Sure, I used to add in a few M&M’s. But then I’d just end up picking them out and eating them. To keep them from melting in the Little Man’s hands. I’d do Anything for him…

I am SUCH a good mom…

Not Your Mama's Trail Mix
Dish: Snack
Prep time:
Total time:
  • 2cups Dry-Roasted Peanuts
  • ¾cup Craisins
  • ¾cup Raisins
  • 2cups Natural Almonds
  • 1½cups Banana Chips
  1. Pour all ingredients into a large bowl.
  2. Mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon.
  3. Store in air-tight containers for up to a month.
Don't worry about adding in the chocolate. Just hide it in the back of the freezer, and ...take care... of it after the kids have gone to bed.

I was just thinking (in the shower) the other day that I should mix up some trail mix, but then I got all paranoid about Mac choking on the nuts. But you haven’t seen any problems with that (obviously…since your kids are still alive…)?
