Team Gimpy Has Lost It’s Gimp

in I Learn the Lessons So You Don't Have To, Running In Place

I know. It saddens me too. Especially since I came up with our motto:

Running, Walking, or Limping – we Will be crossing that finish line.

And then convinced my SIL to enter this fall’s 5k with me.

Although, to be fair, it seemed like the perfect idea at the time. I’d give myself roughly 22 weeks to do the incredibly easy 9 week Couch-to-5K program, run 5minutes of the 5K, and then have Emily carry me over the finish line.

What?? She likes obstacle-course 5K’s and iron man competitions.

22 weeks. To do a 9 week program. Even those of us who are a little math-challenged could do it at least twice over in that time frame.

What I failed to add into the equation, however, is that running? Is freakin’ hard.

I don’t know how all those toddlers do it.

Of course, it didn’t help that I had no clue. And managed to injure myself within the first 3 days of the program. And then had to wear a boot for 6 weeks. And then re-injured myself when I insisted I was fine to run after just 3 weeks in the boot.

Which just goes to show, all those times I chose to be late to class rather than run the 5feet to catch the bus? I. was. RIGHT.

So now I’ve started a new program, created by the Big Man himself, which is designed to get me at least to the starting line for next year’s 5K. Maybe.

I call it the Slug-to-Snail program. Aka: Running for Dummies. It goes a little something like this:

Week 1: Walk 30min every other day.

Week 2: Walk 30min every day.

Week 3: Every –other day: Walk 5min, Run 60sec, Walk 2min, Run 60sec, Walk 21min. Off days: Walk 30min.

I started week 3 today, so that’s as far as I’ve gotten. Which, given that I’ve been working at it for a total of 4 weeks now, is pretty impressive progress!

Now I just need to go find a pair of pom-poms. Because Team Gimpy never lets a teammate cross that finish line alone.

Even if it’s just from the sidelines.
